Grand unification through gravitational effects

چکیده
We systematically study the unification of gauge couplings in the presence of (one or more) effective dimension-5 operators cHG G =4Mpl, induced into the grand unified theory by gravitational interactions at the Planck scale. These operators alter the usual condition for gauge-coupling unification, which can, depending on the Higgs content H and vacuum expectation value, result in unification at scales MX significantly different than naively expected. We find nonsupersymmetric models of SUð5Þ and SOð10Þ unification, with natural Wilson coefficients c, that easily satisfy the constraints from proton decay. Furthermore, gauge-coupling unification at scales as high as the Planck scale seems feasible, possibly hinting at simultaneous unification of gauge and gravitational interactions. In the Appendix we work out the group theoretical aspects of this scenario for SUð5Þ and SOð10Þ unified groups in detail; this material is also relevant in the analysis of nonuniversal gaugino masses obtained from supergravity.

Grand unification and enhanced quantum gravitational effects.
In grand unified theories with large numbers of fields, renormalization effects significantly modify the scale at which quantum gravity becomes strong. This in turn can modify the boundary conditions for coupling constant unification, if higher dimensional operators induced by gravity are taken into consideration. We show that the generic size of, and the uncertainty in, these effects from grav...

متن کاملGravitational corrections to fermion masses in grand unified theories
There are several hints that the strong and electroweak forces unify at some very large energy typically assumed to be at around 10 GeV. The quantum fields of the standard model fit nicely into simple representations of a grand unified theory [1] such as e.g. SUð5Þ or SOð10Þ. The idea of unification is extremely attractive for several reasons. For example, a grand unification drastically reduce...
متن کاملFurther thoughts on supersymmetric E8 as a family and grand unification theory
We continue the analysis of the possibility of supersymmetric E8 as a family unification and grand unification theory, this time under the assumptions that there is a vacuum gluino condensate, but that this condensate is not accompanied by dynamical generation of a mass gap in the pure E8 gauge theory. Arguments supporting these assumptions are given. When the E8 theory is coupled to supergravi...
متن کاملEffects of gravitational smearing on predictions of supergravity grand unification.
Limits on gravitational smearing from the dominant dimension 5 operator(with strength characterised by cM/2MP lanck) are obtained using the LEP data in supersymmetric SU(5) grand unification.Effects of c on the quasi infrared fixed point solutions of mb/mτ unification are also analysed. It is found that c > 0 softens and c < 0 stiffens the fixed point constraint. The effect of c on the upper bou...
